Problem

A water-heater element is made of nichrome wire and is to be used on a 230 V a.c. mains supply. (a) The element has a resistance of 46 Ω at its operating temperature. Calculate the power it consumes when connected to the mains. (b) The heater is protected by a fuse that can safely carry a maximum current of 10 A. Decide, with calculation, whether this fuse rating is adequate for the heater. (c) The manufacturer wishes to design a similar heater for a 115 V supply while keeping the same power output as in part (a). Determine the resistance that the new element should have.
