Problem

Two incandescent bulbs are marked "40 W – 220 V" and "100 W – 220 V". The two bulbs are connected to a 220 V mains supply in two different ways. (i) First they are connected in series across 220 V. (ii) Next they are connected in parallel across 220 V. Answer the following for each arrangement. (a) For each bulb, calculate its resistance at the rated voltage. (b) In the series arrangement, determine the current through the circuit. (c) Using your result from (b), find the power dissipated in each bulb when they are in series. (d) In the parallel arrangement, calculate the power dissipated in each bulb. (e) Comparing your answers from (c) and (d), state which bulb glows brighter in each arrangement and give a brief reason based on your calculations.
