Problem

Answer the following with reference to steady, incompressible flow of an ideal fluid in a horizontal pipe of varying cross-section. (a) State the equation of continuity and explain, without using numerical values, how it relates the speeds of the fluid at two different cross-sections. (b) Using energy considerations, explain qualitatively why the pressure in the narrower part of the pipe is lower than in the wider part. (c) Describe briefly how the effect explained in part (b) is utilised in a Venturimeter to measure the discharge through a pipeline.
