The oxidation of NO to NO2 follows the rate law rate=k[NO]2[O2]. Two mechanisms are suggested.
Mechanism I
Step 1 (slow): NO + O2 → NO3
Step 2 (fast): NO + NO3 → 2NO2
Mechanism II
Step 1 (slow): 2NO → N2O2
Step 2 (fast): N2O2 + O2 → 2NO2
Identify which mechanism (I or II) is compatible with the rate law and state one brief reason for your choice.
