Problem

A solid uniform cylinder of mass 2.0 kg2.0\,\text{kg} and radius 0.15 m0.15\,\text{m} starts from rest at the top of a rough incline that is 1.2 m1.2\,\text{m} high. The cylinder rolls without slipping down the incline. (a) Calculate the total mechanical work done on the cylinder by all external forces as it moves from the top to the bottom of the incline. (b) Determine the cylinder’s linear speed at the bottom of the incline. (c) The static friction force exerts the torque that causes the cylinder to roll. Using your answers to parts (a) and (b), determine the net work done on the cylinder by the static friction force alone and explain the sign of your result.
