Problem

An ideal monatomic gas is confined by a spring-loaded massless piston of cross-sectional area 8.0×10−3 m28.0\times10^{-3}\,\mathrm{m^2}. Initially, the gas is at 300 K300\,\mathrm K, occupies a volume of 2.4×10−3 m32.4\times10^{-3}\,\mathrm{m^3}, and the spring is relaxed. The gas is heated by an electric heater until the frictionless piston moves out slowly by 0.10 m0.10\,\mathrm m. The spring constant is 8000 N m−18000\,\mathrm{N\,m^{-1}}, atmospheric pressure is 1.0×105 N m−21.0\times10^5\,\mathrm{N\,m^{-2}}, and the cylinder and piston are thermally insulated. Calculate: (1) The final temperature of the gas. (2) The energy supplied by the heater.
