Problem

Three point charges are located at the vertices of a right-angled triangle in the xyxy-plane. A charge qq is placed at the origin O(0,0,0)O(0,0,0), a charge QQ at A(a,0,0)A(a,0,0) on the positive xx-axis, and a charge QQ at B(0,b,0)B(0,b,0) on the positive yy-axis. (i) Derive an expression for the displacement vector from QQ at AA to qq at OO and the corresponding unit vector. (ii) Derive a similar expression for the displacement vector from QQ at BB to qq at OO and its unit vector. (iii) Hence obtain the net electrostatic force on the charge qq at the origin in terms of k, q, Q, ak,\,q,\,Q,\,a, and bb, expressing your answer in i^\hat{\mathbf i} and j^\hat{\mathbf j} components. (iv) Show that when a=ba=b, the net force on qq is directed along the line y=xy=x and state whether the interaction is attractive or repulsive for (a) qQ>0qQ>0 and (b) qQ<0qQ<0.
