Problem
A rigid steel cylinder contains 0.50mol of neon gas at an initial temperature of 250 K. The gas is slowly warmed to 400 K while the volume of the cylinder remains constant. Assume neon behaves as an ideal monatomic gas. Use R=8.31Jmol−1K−1.
(a) Determine the percentage change in the average translational kinetic energy of a neon atom during the warming process.
(b) Calculate the change in the total internal energy of the gas contained in the cylinder.
(c) Explain how your answers to parts (a) and (b) are consistent with the microscopic interpretation of temperature.
