Problem

A square iron plate of side 0.50 m0.50\,\text{m} has a circular hole of diameter 10 cm10\,\text{cm} drilled through its centre. The plate is initially at 10 ∘C10\,^{\circ}\text{C}. Its coefficient of linear expansion is α=1.2×10−5 K−1\alpha = 1.2 \times 10^{-5}\,\text{K}^{-1}. The plate is heated uniformly to 210 ∘C210\,^{\circ}\text{C}. (a) Calculate the change in area of the square plate (ignoring the hole). (b) Determine the change in area of the circular hole. (c) Hence find the final area of the hole as well as the net area of metal in the plate after heating.
