Problem

A crate of mass 5 kg5\,\text{kg} is released from rest at the top of a rough inclined plane that makes an angle of 37∘37^{\circ} with the horizontal. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the crate and the plane is 0.200.20. Determine the distance the crate must slide down the plane before its speed becomes 10 m s−110\,\text{m\,s}^{-1}. (i) Write expressions for the components (along the plane) of the gravitational force and the kinetic friction acting on the crate. (ii) Using these forces, obtain an algebraic expression for the net work done on the crate when it has moved a distance ss down the plane. (iii) Hence calculate the value of ss required for the crate to reach the stated speed.
