Problem

A pair of oppositely charged, horizontal, parallel plates are separated by 2.0 cm2.0\,\text{cm} and are 12 cm12\,\text{cm} long in the direction of a particle beam. The upper plate is at a potential 600 V600\,\text{V} higher than the lower plate. An α\alpha-particle (mass 6.6×10−27 kg6.6\times10^{-27}\,\text{kg}, charge +3.2×10−19 C+3.2\times10^{-19}\,\text{C}) enters the region midway between the plates, travelling horizontally with speed 1.5×105 m s−11.5\times10^{5}\,\text{m}\,\text{s}^{-1}. Neglect gravitational effects. (a) Determine the magnitude and direction of the electric field between the plates. (b) Calculate the vertical component of the α\alpha-particle’s acceleration while it is between the plates. (c) Find the time required for the particle to travel the 12 cm12\,\text{cm} length of the plates. (d) Compute the vertical displacement of the particle from its entry line by the time it exits the region between the plates. (e) The gap between the plates is 2.0 cm2.0\,\text{cm}. Does the particle collide with either plate before it exits? Justify your conclusion quantitatively.
