Problem
A charged particle of charge q and mass m is projected with uniform speed v0 into a region where a uniform magnetic field B exists at right angles to the initial velocity. Answer the following with proper reasoning:
(i) State the expression for the magnetic force acting on a moving charge and specify the factors that decide its direction.
(ii) Explain why the particle moves in a circular path rather than accelerating linearly even though a constant magnitude force acts on it.
(iii) How does the sense of rotation of the circular path change if the sign of the charge is reversed while all other parameters remain the same? Justify using the right-hand rule.
(iv) If two particles P and Q having equal speeds but opposite charges enter the field at the same point, sketch qualitatively the trajectories they will follow and comment on whether they will ever meet again within the field region.
