Problem

In a laboratory experiment the speed of sound in dry air at 0 ∘C0\,^{\circ}\text{C} and 1.01×105 Pa1.01\times10^{5}\,\text{Pa} is measured to be 332 m s−1332\,\text{m\,s}^{-1}. The density of air under these conditions is 1.293 kg m−31.293\,\text{kg\,m}^{-3}. (i) Using the measured speed and the given density and pressure, calculate the value of γ\gamma that the experiment implies. (ii) The tabulated value of γ\gamma for air is 1.401.40. Find the percentage deviation of the experimental γ\gamma from the tabulated value. (iii) Discuss two possible experimental or theoretical reasons that could account for the deviation obtained in part (ii).
