Problem

Oil of specific gravity 0.80.8 flows through a 0.20 m0.20\,\text{m} diameter pipeline. A stagnation tube inserted at the centreline and a static pressure tapping on the pipe wall are connected to a mercury manometer. The static tapping is situated 0.30 m0.30\,\text{m} vertically below the stagnation tube entry point. During steady flow the mercury columns differ in level by 18 cm18\,\text{cm}. Take g=9.8 m s−2g=9.8\,\text{m s}^{-2} and density of mercury =13 600 kg m−3=13\,600\,\text{kg\,m}^{-3}. (i) Determine the average speed of oil in the pipeline accounting for the vertical separation of the tappings. (ii) Calculate the volumetric flow rate through the pipe. (iii) If the vertical separation were mistakenly ignored, find the percentage error that would arise in the calculated speed.
