Problem

A ball is released from rest from the top of a tall building and allowed to fall freely under gravity. After 3.0 s3.0\,\text{s} its speed is found to be 29.4 m s−129.4\,\text{m\,s}^{-1}. Answer the questions below: (i) Calculate the average acceleration of the ball during these 3.0 s3.0\,\text{s}. (ii) State the instantaneous acceleration of the ball while it is falling (take the magnitude of acceleration due to gravity as 9.8 m s−29.8\,\text{m\,s}^{-2}). (iii) Comment on the equality or otherwise of the values obtained in parts (i) and (ii), explaining the reason briefly.
