Problem

A student plans to determine the value of the acceleration due to gravity in the school laboratory by releasing a small steel ball from rest and measuring the time it takes to fall through a known vertical distance. (a) State the physical assumption that allows the motion of the ball to be treated as uniformly accelerated during the fall. (b) Starting from the general kinematic relation for uniformly accelerated motion, derive the expression that connects the height of fall hh and the measured time of fall tt when the ball is released from rest. (c) Explain any three possible experimental sources of error in this method and describe one way of reducing each error.
