Problem

A student investigates the variation of current with frequency in a series RLC circuit that has L=200 mHL = 200\,\text{mH} and C=50.0 nFC = 50.0\,\text{nF}. (i) Explain qualitatively why the current first increases and then decreases as the frequency of the applied voltage is gradually raised from a low value. (ii) Calculate the resonant frequency for the given values of LL and CC, and verify that the magnitudes of inductive and capacitive reactances are equal at this frequency. (iii) State the phase relationship between the source voltage and the circuit current (a) at resonance, (b) for frequencies lower than resonance, and (c) for frequencies higher than resonance.
