Problem

A series RR–LL–CC circuit is supplied by a sinusoidal source of rms voltage 230 V230\,\text{V}. The circuit elements have the following values: R=100 ΩR = 100\,\Omega, L=0.318 HL = 0.318\,\text{H}, C=159 μFC = 159\,\mu\text{F}. The supply frequency can be varied. (a) When the frequency is 40 Hz40\,\text{Hz}, calculate the inductive reactance, the capacitive reactance, and the impedance of the circuit. Hence find the phase difference between the supply voltage and the current, stating whether the current leads or lags. (b) For the frequency of 40 Hz40\,\text{Hz} obtained in part (a), determine the time lag between the voltage maximum and the current maximum. (c) Repeat the calculations of parts (a) and (b) for a frequency of 50 Hz50\,\text{Hz}. Comment briefly on the values of the phase difference and the time lag at this frequency.
