Problem

A stone is whirled in a circle and then released so that it moves in a straight line with a certain speed. Answer the following questions about the stone: (i) Write the mathematical expression for the kinetic energy of a body of mass mm moving with speed vv. (ii) The stone possesses 90 J90\,\text{J} of kinetic energy while moving with a speed of 6 m ⁣/s6\,\text{m\!/s}. Calculate the mass of the stone. (iii) The speed of the same stone is later reduced to 3 m ⁣/s3\,\text{m\!/s}. Determine its new kinetic energy. (iv) Using your answers to parts (ii) and (iii), state how the kinetic energy of a body depends on its speed when the mass remains constant.
