Problem

Magnesium ribbon reacts with excess hydrochloric acid, and the resulting hydrogen gas is collected over water in a eudiometer tube. When the reaction is complete, the following data are recorded: • Volume of the gas mixture: 245 mL245\,\text{mL} • Temperature of the water bath: 24∘C24^{\circ}\text{C} • Barometric pressure: 752 mmHg752\,\text{mmHg} • Vapor pressure of water at 24∘C24^{\circ}\text{C}: 22.4 mmHg22.4\,\text{mmHg} For calculations, use R=0.0821 L⋅atm⋅mol−1⋅K−1R = 0.0821\,\text{L}\cdot\text{atm}\cdot\text{mol}^{-1}\cdot\text{K}^{-1}. (a) Determine the pressure (in atm) exerted solely by the hydrogen gas under the collection conditions. (b) Calculate the amount, in moles, of hydrogen present in the tube. (c) Determine the mass of hydrogen collected.
