Problem

(a) State the ideal mechanical assumptions made for a laboratory pulley–string arrangement used to study motion of connected bodies. (b) Two masses m1m_1 and m2m_2 are joined by a light, inextensible string passing over a smooth, friction-less pulley. If the system is released from rest, show that the magnitude of acceleration of the system is a=(m2−m1)gm1+m2a=\frac{(m_2-m_1)g}{m_1+m_2} and obtain an expression for the tension TT in the string. (c) Using your result from part (b), calculate aa and TT when m1=3 kgm_1=3\,\text{kg} and m2=5 kgm_2=5\,\text{kg}, taking g=9.8 m s−2g=9.8\,\text{m\,s}^{-2}.
