Problem

A piecewise–defined function hh is given by h(x)={ax2+32x2−1,x≥0,bx2−5x2+2,x<0,h(x)=\begin{cases} \dfrac{a x^{2}+3}{2x^{2}-1}, & x\ge 0,\\ \dfrac{b x^{2}-5}{x^{2}+2}, & x<0, \end{cases} where aa and bb are real constants. (1) Part 1: (a) Find the values of aa and bb so that the horizontal asymptote of hh as x→∞x\to\infty is y=34y=\dfrac{3}{4} and the horizontal asymptote as x→−∞x\to-\infty is y=−2y=-2. Justify your work. (2) Part 2: (b) Using the values of aa and bb found in part (a), evaluate lim⁡x→0−h(x)\displaystyle\lim_{x\to0^-}h(x) and lim⁡x→0+h(x)\displaystyle\lim_{x\to0^+}h(x). Does hh remain continuous at x=0x=0 under your choices of aa and bb? Explain. (3) Part 3: (c) Determine the value of h(0)h(0) (if any) that would make hh continuous at x=0x=0. Provide justification using the appropriate limit laws.
