Problem

Two projectiles P and Q are launched from the same point on level ground with the same initial speed vv. They return to the point of projection. Their horizontal ranges are equal to RR but their maximum heights are different, being H1H_1 for P and H2H_2 (>H1)(>H_1) for Q. (i) Show that the projection angles θ1\theta_1 and θ2\theta_2 satisfy tan⁡θi=4HiR\displaystyle \tan \theta_i = \dfrac{4H_i}{R} for i=1,2i = 1,2. (ii) Hence obtain explicit expressions for θ1\theta_1 and θ2\theta_2 in terms of H1H_1, H2H_2 and RR. (iii) If R=80 mR = 80\,\text{m}, H1=10 mH_1 = 10\,\text{m} and H2=40 mH_2 = 40\,\text{m}, calculate θ1\theta_1, θ2\theta_2 and the common initial speed vv. Take g=9.8 m s−2g = 9.8\,\text{m s}^{-2}.
