Problem

An inductor of negligible resistance is connected to an alternating voltage source of fixed rms value VrmsV_{\mathrm{rms}}. (i) Write the expression for the rms current IrmsI_{\mathrm{rms}} in terms of the inductive reactance. (ii) Show algebraically that if the frequency of the applied voltage is doubled, the rms current becomes half its original value. (iii) For Vrms=120 VV_{\mathrm{rms}}=120\,\text V, L=0.30 HL=0.30\,\text H and initial frequency f1=40 Hzf_1=40\,\text{Hz}, calculate the rms current at f1f_1 and at 2f12f_1. (iv) Comment on the average power consumed by the inductor in both cases.
