Problem

A proton of kinetic energy 3.0 keV3.0\,\text{keV} enters a region of uniform magnetic field 0.30 T0.30\,\text{T} directed vertically downward. The velocity of the proton on entry is horizontal and due east. (i) Show that the trajectory of the proton inside the field is circular and calculate the radius of its path. Take mp=1.67×10−27 kgm_p = 1.67\times10^{-27}\,\text{kg} and e=1.60×10−19 Ce = 1.60\times10^{-19}\,\text{C}. (ii) Determine the direction of the magnetic force acting on the proton at the instant it enters the field. (iii) An electron having the same speed replaces the proton. State the initial direction of the magnetic force on the electron and obtain the ratio of the radius of the electron’s path to that of the proton.
