Problem

A goods train of total mass 1000 kg1000\,\text{kg} moves on a straight level track. At a certain instant its speed is 10 m s−110\,\text{m}\,\text{s}^{-1}. A constant engine pull of 2000 N2000\,\text{N} acts in the forward direction while resistive forces due to air and track together amount to 900 N900\,\text{N} opposite to the motion. (i) Determine the magnitude and direction of the resultant horizontal force acting on the train. (ii) Find the acceleration of the train produced by this force. (iii) Starting with the basic kinematic relations for motion with uniform acceleration, derive an expression for the distance covered by the train in a time tt when it moves under the acceleration found in part (ii). (iv) Using your expression from part (iii), calculate the distance travelled in the first 20 s20\,\text{s} after the instant described.
