Problem

A ray of light travels from water (n=1.33)(n=1.33) into a glass slab (n=1.52)(n=1.52) and then attempts to emerge into air (n=1.00)(n=1.00). The first interface is water–glass, the second is glass–air. The ray is incident in water at 60∘60^{\circ} to the normal. (i) Calculate the angle that the ray makes with the normal inside the glass. (ii) Will the ray emerge into air or undergo total internal reflection at the glass–air boundary? Give calculations to support your answer.
