Problem

A resistance R=40 ΩR = 40\,\Omega, an inductance L=0.15 HL = 0.15\,\text{H} and a capacitance C=100 μFC = 100\,\mu\text{F} are connected in series to a 220 V220\,\text{V} (rms), 50 Hz50\,\text{Hz} mains supply. (i) Calculate the inductive reactance and the capacitive reactance at 50 Hz50\,\text{Hz}. (ii) Determine the impedance of the circuit and hence the rms current drawn from the source. (iii) Find the rms voltages across the resistor, inductor and capacitor respectively. (iv) Draw a scaled phasor diagram for the three component voltages and the supply voltage, taking the current as the reference. (v) Using the numerical results of part (iii) and the diagram of part (iv), verify that the supply rms voltage equals the vector sum of the individual rms voltages.
