Problem

A slope field is shown (described verbally below). • At every point on the line y=xy=x, the line segment is horizontal. • At (2,0)(2,0) the segment slopes upward at approximately 45∘45^{\circ} (slope ≈1\approx 1), while at (0,2)(0,2) the segment slopes downward at approximately −45∘-45^{\circ} (slope ≈−1\approx -1). • In the region above the line y=xy=x, all segments slope downward (negative slope); in the region below the line y=xy=x, all segments slope upward (positive slope). • The steeper the vertical distance from the line y=xy=x, the steeper the segment. Four candidate differential equations are proposed: (a) Describe two distinct geometric features of the slope field that are critical for determining which differential equation generated it. (b) Using those features, identify the single differential equation (from I–IV) that exactly matches the slope field. Justify your choice by relating specific points or regions of the slope field to the symbolic form of the differential equation.
