Problem

Io, one of Jupiter’s moons, moves in a nearly circular orbit of radius 4.22×108 m4.22\times10^{8}\,\text{m} and has an orbital period of 1.769 days1.769\,\text{days}. Take G=6.674×10−11 N m2 kg−2G = 6.674\times10^{-11}\,\text{N}\,\text{m}^{2}\,\text{kg}^{-2} and Jupiter’s mean radius as 7.14×107 m7.14\times10^{7}\,\text{m}. (i) Using the data given, estimate the mass of Jupiter. (ii) Hence calculate the acceleration due to gravity at Jupiter’s cloud‐top level. (iii) Compare this value with the acceleration due to gravity on the Earth’s surface.
