Problem

A student determines the density of an irregular solid using a spring balance and a measuring cylinder. (i) The solid weighs 29.4 N29.4\,\text{N} in air. Taking g=9.8 m s−2g = 9.8\,\text{m s}^{-2}, calculate its mass in kilograms. (ii) The initial water level in the measuring cylinder is 60 mL60\,\text{mL} and rises to 75 mL75\,\text{mL} after the solid is fully immersed. Find the volume of the solid in m3\text{m}^{3}. (iii) Using your answers to (i) and (ii), compute the density of the solid in kg m−3\text{kg m}^{-3}. (iv) The density of water is 1000 kg m−31000\,\text{kg m}^{-3}. State whether the solid will sink or float when placed in water and justify your answer.
