Problem

Household appliances are generally connected in parallel to the same supply voltage. Consider two appliances that can each be modelled as pure resistors R1R_1 and R2R_2. (i) Show algebraically that, for a fixed supply voltage, the power consumed by an appliance is inversely proportional to its resistance. (ii) Hence explain why, when connected to the same mains, an electric heater (low resistance) consumes far more power than an LED lamp (high resistance).
