Problem

In a laboratory estimation, the following measurements were recorded: • Mass of an empty beaker = 45.63 g • Mass of beaker + salt solution = 78.295 g • Volume of the salt solution delivered by a pipette = 32.8 mL (i) Find the mass of the salt solution, stating the answer with the proper number of significant figures. (ii) Using the value obtained in (i), calculate the density of the salt solution and write the result with the correct significant figures and appropriate unit. (iii) A student repeated the calculations but rounded the mass of the solution from part (i) to 3 significant figures before evaluating the density. Re-calculate the density using this prematurely rounded mass and determine the percentage difference between the two density values. Comment briefly on the effect of premature rounding on the accuracy of the final result.
