Problem

In a laboratory demonstration, a technician gradually pours an unknown liquid into a clean, dry 100 mL graduated cylinder placed on an electronic balance. The mass of liquid (not including the cylinder) is recorded after each addition. A straight-line graph of the technician’s data passes through the origin and through the point corresponding to 50.0 mL of liquid and 39.5 g of mass. The relationship is assumed perfectly linear over the entire range considered. (a) Determine the density of the liquid. Include appropriate units. (b) Using your result from part (a), calculate the mass of 200 mL of the same liquid. (c) During the demonstration the technician accidentally records a single data pair of (30.0 mL, 55.0 g) that does not lie on the straight line. Explain qualitatively how including this point in a best-fit analysis would affect the calculated density, and justify whether the point should be retained or discarded.
