Problem

An industrial motor of power rating 15 kW runs 8 h per day, five days a week. (i) Compute the total electrical energy consumed by the motor in one calendar year (assume 52 weeks). Give answers both in kilowatt-hour and in megajoule. (ii) A backup battery bank stores 900 MJ of energy. For how many hours can the battery alone operate the motor continuously at its rated power? (iii) The utility company imposes a limit that the average weekly power drawn by this motor must not exceed 10 kW. Determine the maximum number of hours per working day the motor may be run so that the average weekly power stays within this limit.
