Problem

A venturimeter is fitted in a horizontal water main whose entry diameter is 8.0 cm and throat diameter is 3.0 cm. A differential mercury manometer connected between the entry and the throat shows a steady reading of 20 cm of mercury column. Take the density of mercury as 13 600 kg m−313\,600\,\text{kg}\,\text{m}^{-3} and that of water as 1000 kg m−31000\,\text{kg}\,\text{m}^{-3}. (i) Convert the manometer reading into the corresponding pressure difference between the entry and the throat of the venturimeter. (ii) Using the measured pressure difference, calculate the volume flow rate of water in the main. (iii) Compute the speed of water in the throat section.
