Problem

Consider a series LCR circuit whose inductance and resistance remain unchanged while its capacitance is doubled. (i) Show that the new resonant angular frequency becomes ω0 ′=ω0/2\omega_{0}^{\,'}=\omega_{0}/\sqrt{2}, where ω0\omega_{0} is the original resonant angular frequency. (ii) Derive an expression for the ratio of the new bandwidth Δω ′\Delta\omega^{\,'} to the original bandwidth Δω\Delta\omega. (iii) Hence determine whether doubling the capacitance makes the resonance sharper or broader, giving algebraic justification based on your result in part (ii).
