Problem

Three capacitors having capacitances C1, C2C_1,\,C_2 and C3C_3 are connected between the same fixed points AA and BB of a circuit so that the potential difference across each capacitor is identical. (i) Explain, with the help of charge conservation, how the total charge delivered by a source to this system is related to the individual charges Q1, Q2Q_1,\,Q_2 and Q3Q_3 on the three capacitors. (ii) Using the reasoning of part (i) only, argue qualitatively why the effective capacitance of this arrangement must always be greater than the largest of C1, C2C_1,\,C_2 and C3C_3.
