Problem

An electric kettle is rated at 500 W, 250 V and is assumed to behave as a pure resistor whose resistance does not vary with temperature. (i) Calculate the current drawn by the kettle at its rated voltage. (ii) Determine the resistance of the heating element from the rating data. (iii) The mains voltage rises steadily to 275 V while the element resistance remains the same. Calculate the new power consumed by the kettle. (iv) Hence find the percentage increase in power compared to the rated value.
