Problem

In a calorimetry experiment the following mass readings are taken: Mass of calorimeter plus water before heating: 245.32 g (±0.05 g)245.32\,\text{g}\,(\pm0.05\,\text{g}) Mass of calorimeter plus water after heating: 243.85 g (±0.05 g)243.85\,\text{g}\,(\pm0.05\,\text{g}) Mass of empty calorimeter: 35.12 g (±0.02 g)35.12\,\text{g}\,(\pm0.02\,\text{g}) (i) Calculate the initial mass of water in the calorimeter. (ii) Calculate the final mass of water after heating. (iii) Determine the mass of water that evaporated and the absolute uncertainty associated with this value. (iv) Express the evaporated mass with its uncertainty using the correct number of significant figures, and compute the percentage uncertainty. Comment briefly on whether this level of uncertainty significantly affects the reliability of the evaporation measurement.
