Problem

Two resistors, RR and 3R3R, are connected in series to a direct-current source whose potential difference is VV. (i) Derive an expression for the current II flowing through the circuit in terms of VV and RR. (ii) Obtain algebraic expressions for the powers P1P_1 and P2P_2 dissipated in the resistors RR and 3R3R respectively. (iii) Hence find the ratio P1:P2P_1 : P_2. (iv) If V=12 VV = 12\,\text{V} and the power in the smaller resistor RR is required to be 18 W18\,\text{W}, calculate the numerical value of RR. (Assume the resistors can safely handle the power involved.)
