Problem
Two extensive conducting plates are arranged so that the line perpendicular to both plates makes an angle of 30∘ above the positive x-axis in the xy-plane. The plates are 5.0cm apart (measured along the shortest distance between them) and are maintained at a potential difference of 450V. Ignore edge effects.
(a) Determine the magnitude of the electric field between the plates.
(b) Resolve this field into its x- and y-components.
(c) A proton released from rest at the plate of higher potential moves 2.0cm along the direction of the field. Calculate its speed at that point.
(d) State whether the proton’s electric potential energy increases or decreases during the motion, and by how much.
