Problem

Consider the rational function h:R∖{3}→Rh:\mathbb R\setminus\{3\}\to\mathbb R given by h(x)=2x+5x−3h(x)=\dfrac{2x+5}{x-3}. (i) Rewrite h(x)h(x) in the form h(x)=2+11x−3h(x)=2+\dfrac{11}{x-3} and, using this form, discuss how the sign of (x−3)(x-3) affects the behaviour of hh on the intervals (−∞,3)(-\infty,3) and (3,∞)(3,\infty). (ii) Determine the range of hh on each of the two intervals separately. (iii) Combine the results obtained in part (ii) to state the complete range of hh on its domain R∖{3}\mathbb R\setminus\{3\}.
