Problem

During an experiment to estimate the latent heat of fusion of ice, 0.12 kg0.12\,\text{kg} of ice at 0 ∘C0\,^{\circ}\text{C} is added to a copper calorimeter containing 0.30 kg0.30\,\text{kg} of water at 35 ∘C35\,^{\circ}\text{C}. The water equivalent of the calorimeter is 0.02 kg0.02\,\text{kg}. After the ice melts completely and thorough stirring, the final temperature of the system is 5 ∘C5\,^{\circ}\text{C}. (Specific heat capacity of water =4200 J kg−1 K−1=4200\,\text{J\,kg}^{-1}\,\text{K}^{-1}.) (i) Construct the thermal energy balance for the system, clearly identifying each term involved. (ii) Calculate the latent heat of fusion of ice from the measurements.
