Problem

Consider two bodies of masses m1m_1 and m2m_2 separated by a distance rr. The gravitational potential energy of the system is U=−Gm1m2rU = -G\dfrac{m_1 m_2}{r}. (i) Obtain the differential dUdr\dfrac{\mathrm dU}{\mathrm dr} in terms of UU and rr. (ii) Hence show that the fractional change in gravitational potential energy for a small change dr\mathrm dr in separation is given by dUU=−drr\dfrac{\mathrm dU}{U} = -\dfrac{\mathrm dr}{r}. (iii) A spacecraft gradually increases its orbital radius from rr to r+Δrr+\Delta r, where Δr=0.01 r\Delta r = 0.01\,r. Using the above result, estimate the percentage change in its gravitational potential energy, clearly stating any approximation used.
