Problem

A laboratory cyclotron employs a uniform magnetic field of 1.5 T1.5\,\text{T} to accelerate protons (q=1.6×10−19 C,  m=1.67×10−27 kg)(q=1.6\times10^{-19}\,\text{C},\;m=1.67\times10^{-27}\,\text{kg}). (i) Calculate the operating frequency that must be applied to the dee system so that the protons remain in step with the accelerating voltage. (ii) Determine the corresponding time period of revolution. (iii) The protons are allowed to leave the machine when they acquire a kinetic energy of 5.0 MeV5.0\,\text{MeV}. Find the radius of the orbit at which they exit. Take 1 eV=1.6×10−19 J1\,\text{eV}=1.6\times10^{-19}\,\text{J}.
