Problem

Two straight wires, each 50 cm long, are connected in series to a 6 V battery. • Wire A is copper of diameter 1 mm. (Resistivity =1.7×10−8 Ω m=1.7\times10^{-8}\,\Omega\,\text{m}) • Wire B is nichrome of diameter 0.5 mm. (Resistivity =1.1×10−6 Ω m=1.1\times10^{-6}\,\Omega\,\text{m}) Answer the following parts: (i) Calculate the heat produced in wire A in 5 s. (ii) Calculate the heat produced in wire B in 5 s. (iii) Which wire is likely to melt first? Justify your answer using the above calculations.
