Problem

A cylindrical chamber contains a frictionless, airtight piston of cross-sectional area 0.010 m20.010\,\text{m}^2. The chamber is connected by a vertical tube to a large open reservoir of fresh water whose surface is 2.3 m above the piston. The air above the water and the air above the piston are both at atmospheric pressure. Assume ρwater=1000 kg/m3\rho_{\text{water}} = 1000\,\text{kg/m}^3 and g=9.8 m/s2g = 9.8\,\text{m/s}^2. (a) Calculate the gauge pressure exerted by the water on the lower face of the piston. (b) Determine the magnitude of the force that the water exerts on the piston. (c) Find the mass that must be placed on top of the piston to hold it in static equilibrium. Ignore the piston’s own mass.
