Problem

A 1.0 m1.0\,\text m long light rod is pivoted at one end. A carpenter can pull with a maximum force of 30 N30\,\text N perpendicular to the rod. What torque about the pivot can he achieve at best? Determine the distance from the pivot where this force must be applied and state whether this point lies on the rod. (i) Calculate the minimum distance from the pivot at which the 30 N30\,\text N force should be applied to produce a torque of 12 N m12\,\text N\,\text m. (ii) Does this point lie on the 1.0 m1.0\,\text m rod? Justify briefly.
