Problem

Three resistive appliances of 46 Ω46\,\Omega, 92 Ω92\,\Omega and 115 Ω115\,\Omega are connected in parallel to a 230 V230\,\text{V} domestic circuit. The branch containing the three appliances is protected by a 5 A5\,\text{A} fuse. Study the following and answer the questions. (i) Calculate the current drawn by each appliance. (ii) Find the total current taken by the parallel combination. (iii) State, with calculation, whether the 5 A5\,\text{A} fuse will melt when all three appliances are switched on simultaneously. (iv) If necessary, suggest the next higher standard fuse rating that would safely protect the circuit without unnecessary interruption.
